62 Spring Street is a 41 unit mixed-use development in the heart of Downtown Auburn, Maine. 62 Spring features 41 units of which 9 are rented market rate and 38 are made available at reduced rents to low and very low income households. At the street level, 62 Spring features over 2,500 square feet of flexible retail space. 62 Spring Street was developed by Anew Development in partnership with the Auburn Housing Development Corp.
During the period of Urban Renewal in the 1960s and 70s, downtown Auburn saw large numbers of its traditional downtown buildings demolished in favor of more suburban style development patterns. Since then, most of the city’s residential and retail activity has left the district. In recent years, the City of Auburn has taken many proactive steps toward revitalizing the downtown through policies that encourage complete streets, public transportation, high speed internet, and traditional form, mixed-use buildings. 62 Spring Street is the first major mixed-use project to rise up under these policies and is hoped to create a catalyst for additional traditional, mixed-use development in Downtown Auburn.
The development team at 62 Spring Street included Anew Development, Auburn Housing Development Corp, MaineHousing, the Northern New England Housing Investment Fund, Bangor Savings Bank, CHA Architecture, Sebago Technics Civil Engineers, Benchmark Construction, and the law offices of Curtis Thaxter.
